Dancing Hares with moulds 1998
Height: 15 feet (4.6 metres)
This image shows the Dancing Hares when it had just been moulded. The moulds, which are seen laid out on the floor, were backed with fibreglass to maintain their shape. The brown marks on the sculpture denote where shellac coated the seams and clay was used to separate the moulds, each section being one mould. There were approximately forty moulds used for this sculpture. Storing moulds becomes a major headache and just finding which piece goes where, is quite a challenge. The sculpture is 15 feet high (4.57 metres) and 28 feet (8.53 metres) across, at the base of the feet. The outward pressure of six tons of bronze meant that the Dancing Hares would have to sit on a frame to contain the force. A triangular stainless steel base was made for the sculpture to stand on. The base would be buried in the ground. The legs were reinfoced with an internal stainless steel armature. Dancing Hares was cast by Pangolin Editions in Chalford....more
