Saumer, Boulogne-sur-mer

Hare head, made with children at Saumer school at Boulogne-sur-mer in 1996. It was made in collaboration with pupils from the school, some of whom had had very little or no connection with the Arts and were themselves struggling to cope with their education within the school system. In some cases the most difficult pupils to deal with became the most rewarding to teach and were very engaged and protective of the project. They were inspired by what can only be described as their visionary art teacher, Jean-Paul Batas-Bjelic whose dedication to the children made possible a great art project for the school in which Sophie, as one of the contributing artists, was proud to have participated.
A local company generously donated the material for the project which was made from high tensile flexible steel tubing. An extremely expensive product and one which would not normally be available for use by an artist....more
