In 1997 Sophie undertook a residency at Cheekwood Sculpture Park, Nashville, Tennessee Here, she made the second version of Crawling Lady Hare, in the woodland at Cheekwood. Sophie made the armature in the workshops at Cheekwood. It was then taken to a site in the woodland and there Sophie worked for a month. The humidity and mosquitos were so bad that the staff at Cheekwood installed a giant electric fan and surrounded the area with citronelle candles. Everyone had to wear thick socks and trousers tucked into heavy boots to keep Chiggers, small parasitic mites, from attacking their legs. It was, however, a beautiful setting in which to work. Everyone there was helpful, courteous and enthusiastic about the Sculpture trail. It seemed very remote from the other Nashville, just down the road...more
